Controlling Lady Luck: How superstition affects your game

Are you a superstitious gambler? If you’re all about getting a feeling and going with that, there’s a chance you believe in some form of luck. But superstitious gambling goes beyond just believing in Lady Luck. For some superstitious gamblers, it’s all about controlling that luck.

Yes, we know. Luck is luck. It can’t be controlled. There’s no controlling complete randomness. But sometimes you just get a feeling that something went a certain way because you did something. Sure, it might be crazy to think you had control of a situation that was completely out of your hands, but sometimes you just can’t explain it.

Today, we’re exploring some of the most popular superstitions today’s gamblers believe in. Perhaps you’ll find a superstition that appeals to you. Or perhaps you’ll shake your head in disbelief that people actually believe in these things.

Blowing on dice

It’s in a famous Sinatra song for a reason. Lady Luck brings good luck when you have someone blow on your dice, or at least that’s how the saying goes. That’s why you’ll see players at the Craps table either blow on their dice or have their significant other or another player blow on the dice before being tossed. This superstition is an interesting one as its origins aren’t clear. Some people believe it comes from the early days when gamblers would try to cheat the system by coating one side of the dice with a special substance that would all of the sudden become sticky when blown on. Other people believe that it has nothing to do with cheating, but rather from the days when dice games were played on the streets. Back then, players would blow on the dice simply to clean them.

Betting on your lucky number

If you have a lucky number, there’s a good chance the Roulette table is the game you want to play. In Roulette, you can bet directly on any number from 1 to 36, plus a single zero and a double zero (but let’s be real, nobody’s lucky number is zero). If you’re playing Roulette and you happen to have a lucky number, be sure to bet on it. But what if your lucky number happens to be above 36? What if, for example, your lucky number is 74? Perhaps that’s the year you were born. Or perhaps that’s your grandmother’s age. Whatever the case just be sure to bet on 7 and 4 simultaneously.

Wearing a lucky piece of clothing

It’s not just athletes who have a lucky piece of clothing. Some gamblers also choose to sport the same clothing that they’ve been successful with. We’re not talking about wearing the same pair of underwear without washing it. That’s just silly. But don’t be surprised to see gamblers talking about their lucky jacket or the pair of lucky pants that they constantly sport. Lucky jackets don’t need to be washed, but if someone at the Blackjack table brags that their pair of pants has given them luck for the last 2 years, you might want to move away before you catch something. Of course, while some superstitious gamblers won’t wash their lucky clothing, others are happy to wash them, knowing that the fabric brings the luck rather than the germs on the garment.

Betting on red

Did you know that in some cultures, the color red is considered lucky. That’s why many players will choose to bet on red playing Roulette. But it’s not restricted to the wheel-based game. In table games where there’s an opportunity to raise or double down, players who are dealt red cards might choose to bet should they be holding red cards. For example, if dealt red cards in Tri Card Poker, even though the hand might not be an amazing one, the color red might prompt superstitious players to play it anyway. And it’s not just about playing the color red. It’s about bringing your own red to the table. Superstitious gamblers who believe in the power of red might choose to wear red clothing like underwear, socks, a shirt, or anything else.

Leaving the tables brings good luck at the slots

If you’re looking to get lucky on the slots, you might want to start at the tables. Many superstitious gamblers believe that leaving the tables is what brings good luck at the slots. So if you’re playing at an online casino, start with some table games first. If you’re superstitious, it could make a difference to your fortune.

See how these superstitions work out for you

Did you know you can practice these superstitions without risking any real money? At The Virtual Casino, you can play free online casino games without making a deposit. That goes for all the latest slots, all our table games, video poker, and even specialty games. All you need is a free account at The Virtual Casino and you’re good to go.

As soon as you’re set up with an account, go ahead and play all your favorite games for free. Don that red shirt. Blow on the virtual dice. Do whatever it takes to see if superstition pays off.

If it doesn’t, you’ve got nothing to lose. But if it does, it might be a good time to make a real money deposit and play for real. When you do, you can win actual money. Many of our table games come with low table limits so you can stretch a $30 deposit into a long session at the casino (and of course, if Lady Luck is on your side, you won’t need to deposit again).

Remember, all you need is an account and a playing device. Most PCs or Macs will do, as long as they’re not running Windows 95 or Mac OS 9. And you can also play on the go on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. So sign up now and make a date with Lady Luck wherever you are.

Want to bet how long will a celebrity marriage last?

For those of you who enjoy or claim to be gambling enthusiasts and like betting on props, such as “When is Lindsay Lohan going to quit drugs?” or more related to the subject “When will the hottest celebrity couple is going to split? This might be pretty interesting: Apparently there is a mathematical equation that tells you the odds on how long a celebrity marriage will last.

Apparently a science writer for The New York Times, who claims to be and uber-geek (according to his own words) has taken the time to create an equation that, according to him, can answer the question of how a long a celebrity marriage can last. The writer is John Tierney, and he writes for the Findings column of the already mentioned newspaper, The New York Times.

Earlier on this decade, a man named Garth Sundem,  who is the author of Brain Trust: 93 Top Scientists Reveal Lab-Tested Secrets to Surfing, Dating, Dieting, Gambling, Growing Man-Eating Plants and More!, was one of the firsts (if not the first) to work on a similar equation back in 2006. The variables of his equation included level of fame and marital track records (wonder what could happen to those who have not been wed before or just struck fame…)

According to Tierney, in spite that his equation still needs a little work done, it was correct predicting the splits of several famous couples such as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher; Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock; and Britney Spears and Kevin Federline (that one, we could predict without a formula).

Among the tweaks and fixes still on the works for the formula, the previous equation measured fame by the number of Google hits, while the new version uses a ratio of the number of times a celebrity has been mentioned in the Times divided by the number of mentions in the National Enquirer. As you can see this new version is based on journalistic response, which makes us think the other might be a bit more accurate since it is actually based on what people look for and not what a newspaper decides to publish, however, Mr. Sundem, the original creator of the equation says “This is a major improvement in the equation…It turns out that overall fame doesn’t matter as much as the flavor of the fame. It’s tabloid fame that dooms you.” He has a good and valid point if you ask us.

Other variables that have been added to the equation are the spouses’ combined age, length of the courtship and, of course, the sex symbol factor,  which is defined as the number of Google hits showing the female part of the couple “in clothing designed to elicit libidinous intent.” Why not men too? Are they not considered sex symbols too?

So what do you think? Are you ready to place your bets on the longevity of a celebrity marriage? If you make friends with the creators of the equation you might get a better chance of boosting up your bankroll.

2010 World Series of Poker- A Glance at the final table

A poker pro, a rising poker star, a wannabe poker stud…..Hey wait!! don’t get me wrong. I am none of these, but definitely one of those who do not wish to miss even a glimpse of the big ‘WORLD POKER SERIES’ each year.

November Nine and the nine players battle for the 2010 WSOP bracelet

7,319 wannabe Poker champs, indeed were seen starting the tournament this year. Left behind are only nine lucky and brilliant masterminds. The total prize pool was one of the largest in history at nearly $68.8 million. This money started being handed out at 747th place. As of right now, the current chip counts the remaining 9 players among which, 6 players are American, 2 Canadians, and 1 Italian.

The nine players with their current chip counts are;

1. Jonathan Duhamel – 65,975,000
2. John Dolan – 46,250,000
3. Joseph Cheong – 23,525,000
4. John Racener – 19,050,000
5. Matthew Jarvis – 16,700,000
6. Filippo Candio – 16,400,000
7. Michael Mizrachi – 14,450,000
8. Soi Nguyen – 9,650,000
9. Jason Senti – 7,625,000

Clearly, from the current numbers, Jonathan Duhamel of Boucherville, Quebec is the current chip leader. He won two huge pots on Day 8 of the WSOP Event and knocked out two players. This left him with nearly a 20 million chip lead over the next closest player, John Dolan.

Another player who has continued to be one of the biggest story lines this year is, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi. He is the only player left now, who has won a bracelet as he won the $50,000 Player’s Championship, giving him an overwhelming edge in live tournament experience over the rest.

With all this and more happening in the world of Poker, WSOP has become one of the the most awaited events by now. The only thing that I am concerned about is, that me and all the poker lovers will have to wait until November to see a champion crowned…HUH!! But, as its likely said, “Wait & Watch”. So, just pack your curosity and get this November booked for the thrill of ‘2010 WSOP’ main event.

Analysts Predict Online Gambling Boom in Current Economic Climate

According to various analysts, the current economic climate seems to be sparking rapid growth in the online gambling industry as governments in need of more tax revenue start to remove bans and tax the resultant surge in bets.

Analyst Anthony Travers, the head of KPMG’s Australian gaming industry practice said that Australia is one of many places examining deregulation. KMPG predicted in one of their reports that the global online betting market will grow by 42% to $32 billion by the year 2012. “With the potential for growth in the sector increasing, the market we see now could be just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.

The Australia’s Productivity Commission draft report into online gambling urged deregulation of the industry and removing the ban on Australian companies operating cyber casinos. Travers said that the prohibition of the industry was not working as it is reported that Australians spend approximately $790 million on offshore cyber casinos. “You would have to think that, longer term, a regulated market with support for problem gamblers would be a better way to go for the governments,” he said.

Travers and many other analysts around the world agree on the prediction that there will be takeovers in the sector and the prospect of foreign entrants.

Australia is clearly not the only country taking this into consideration, a lot of European countries have already started looking into this and making it a reality. Online gambling specialists expect most European Union countries to follow the trend towards deregulation of online gambling, however, they do not have such expectations for the very large potential market in the US and South Korea.

I personally still like to think that the US Government will soon tax online gambling and declare a legal activity, just because it makes sense to do so.

Why Should an Online Gambler Read About Online Gambling?

There is a lot of information available about online casinos. When I first started playing at online casinos I did not think that reading someone’s blog entries, or surfing the web would be enough to cater all my needs and questions about online gambling. I was wrong.

What I love about online gambling is that it is online. Not only does it provide you with the ease of accessing everything you could find at a real casino in a couple of clicks, but it also provides players with an easy way of learning more about online gambling in a couple of clicks too.

All the details about the world’s top online casinos are available to players in a few clicks, you can also find information about all the games and strategy tips. For this reason, when you are choosing a site that will provide answers to all of your questions you should choose with care.

The first thing is to look for a site that provides in-depth analysis of casinos, games and strategy. You want a site that will be honest to you and will tell you the absolute truth about the industry and the sites in it. You also want a site that cares about the players and that provides advice that will benefit them.

If you are new to online gambling you should look for a site that gives newbies tips and strategy and that attempts to explain all terms without assuming players already know it.

Now, I am not trying to sell you a product here, but at The Virtual Casino we try hard to cater our players’ needs and we strive to provide the most in-depth analysis of games and gambling strategy as well as news and the online gambling world.

Personally, I will ask our readers to feel comfortable to address me with any questions they may have, you can post them as comments and I will respond to them as soon as I can. I know how it felt when I first started gambling online and I try to help newbies as much as possible.

On the other hand, I also know how it felt having been playing online for a while and not being able to explore new horizons and improve my expertise level. that is also why I try to give in-depth analysis and discussions of online gaming strategy and tips.

I also encourage our readers to give us feedback and we will listen to their comments openly.

Kentucky Court Lawyers File a Claim Against Full Tilt Poker

The Kentucky domain name seizure case keeps surprising us with new flips to the story, it is starting to get to the point in which we are tired of hearing the news unfolding in the Kentucky Court, however I believe it is important to stay on top of these events.

Recent news broke that the Kentucky Supreme Court has stated that if iMEGA produces a domain name owner in court it could receive a favorable verdict and iMEGA was successful in doing that. However, before the favorable verdict could be ruled the lawyers for the State of Kentucky decided to start another round of legal proceedings with new filing in the Franklin Circuit Court.

The State of Kentucky filed a claim against Poker Kings for monetary losses in 2009 by persons in the border of Kentucky. The claim was filed in the name of Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary J. Michael Brown as before. The new filings state that Pocket Kings is the owner and operator of Full Tilt Poker and it is 14 pages long and it allows the personal jurisdiction of the Kentucky courts over nonresidents against whom there is a monetary claim for acts committed in Kentucky.

“The Full Tilt Defendants have done, or have caused to be done, tortious acts in the Commonwealth for which the Commonwealth has a substantial and compelling interest in exercising personal jurisdiction.” the filing states. The Kentucky lawyers also stated “that there are unknown individuals and entities who have acted in concert in joint ventures “to facilitate, host, operate, and profit from online gambling businesses”. They have listed the entities and personas behind Absolute Poker,, Bugsy’s Club, Cake Poker, Crazy Poker, DoylesRoom, Golden Palace, Microgaming, MySportsbook, Pitbull Poker, PlayersOnly, PokerHost, PokerStars, PokerTime, Red Star Poker, Reefer Poker,

The gambling sites have not responded, we will update you on how the story develops.

Product Released to Combat Problem Gambling

In the past we have talked about how problem gambling is one of the main concerns when it comes to considering the legalization and regulation of online gambling. Many legislators still fear that legalizing online gambling will openly support addictive behaviour and this will lead to an increase in the number of people who have to face social and financial crisis because of their gambling.

The good news for this is that a device now being marketed by Techlink Entertainment called Gameplan could be the solution for this. Gameplan was selected by Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation to empower players to gamble responsibly at authorized video lottery terminals (VLT). The VLTs that will participate in this programme are required to install the software from Gameplan, then the plug and play device is inserted into whichever terminal the player is wagering on.

The device will track the wagers and the results and keep players aware of their gambling patterns on a continuous basis. The objective is for players to get a reality check and they will also be different options available to players based on the money-management criteria they enter into the device. For example, players can program the device to limit losses during a gambling session and the device will lock the player out of all the participating VLTs.

Players also have the option to set a time limit on their wagering sessions and also to be prevented from playing any particular day. There is also a “self-exclusion” option that the player can setup from 1 to 3 days.

“Three independent research firms, two Canadian and one from Las Vegas, agreed that our product has a positive impact on gambling behavior. Providing players with the right information and tools is critical in helping them gamble responsibly.” said John Xidos, President and CEO of Techlink Entertainment when describing the background development of Gameplan. He pointed out that Gameplan was the only solution available today that has been backed through extensive field-testing and research.

Currently, the Internet Gaming Study Committee is examining the product for its effectiveness at online casinos.

Different Types of Online Casinos

For the purpose of classifying different types of online casinos we will put them into three main categories. This is expected to help players understand the implications of the similarities and differences of the companies in the online casino industry.

The first category will be for stand alone casinos. These type of casinos are different from all the others in nearly every aspect. First of all, they are powered by a proprietary software that has been designed exclusively for that one particular casino. The games that a player will encounter in a stand alone online casino are unique and cannot be played anywhere else. These casinos are a rare type and usually they are not very competitive.

Stand alone casinos also offer a limited range of games, as they have to invest a lot of money to develop their own and this money is only recovered from one casino, as opposed to online casinos powered by software providers which offer many more games and add a lot of new ones every year.

Now we are moving one to the second category, the online casinos powered by independent software developers. These software developers also power many other online casinos which means that they all offer identical games as other casinos powered by the same software provider. Each one of these casinos has its own promotions, tournaments and terms and conditions. Also, as we said before they offer a wider range of games than stand alone casinos; this can even mean a 8:1 ratio for some casinos.

The third category is for casinos that function within an online casino group. The casino group shares the same software provider and is operated by the same people but all of the casinos within the group function as independent casinos. These casinos have the same set of games, some may share the promotions but each casino is its own brand. Something that can be positive and negative about these casinos is that they often share the same tournaments so when you sign up for a tournament you could be facing players in all of the other casinos in the group.

The reason for having different types of casinos, and even multiple casinos within the same group is because it gives the owners a chance to offer variety and target different audiences. This is also good for players because when they get bored with the features and the environment casino they have the choice to move to a new one, or even a different one within the same group.

Legalized Online Gambling Making its Way to Canada

Online gambling trend is on the rise in Canada and most of the Canadians are opening up about their feelings towards it . Online gambling is a billion-dollar industry and the federal government is starting to see it as a solution to the effects of the recession.

According to a poll most of the Canadians are secure with the idea of legalized online gambling compare to USA where 50%  are opposed to it.

But Canadians assume that there are some conditions that must be ensured before the activity is actually welcomed. The most important is regulation, those  in favor said that they would not be comfortable with legalized online gambling unless it is being carefully screened. While still there are some people who are edgy about conducting financial transactions online and regulating online gambling ensures security.

As compared to a survey from 2007 in which 28% of Canadians said they knew the activity was illegal, only 23% of Canadians believe that it is still illegal in 2010.

Those who are against the legalization of online gambling said that the government is failing to inform the public on illegal practices and call it foolish. But it will not leave effect for long time; as more and more Canadian provinces move towards legalizing online gambling in an effort to increase the economy.

Online Casino case takes peculiar turn in Kentucky

Kentucky’s top court ruled that online casino operators now need to move  forward to represent themselves if they want to go against the state’s attempt to grab 141 Internet gambling website domain names.

The 17 pages opinion from the Supreme court stated, that iMEGA has no reputation to represent online casino operators in the fight over penalty of Internet gambling domain names. The opinion didnt elaborated that either state has any authority or right to seize domains.

Groups concerned with internet freedom referred to President Obama campaign speech in which he mentioned,“ if Kentucky is successful, any government around the globe could cause websites to disappear from the Internet arbitrarily.”

The attorney representing IMEGA told that this is a small procedural matter, and a very temporary technical set back. He was confident enough that we will be shortly back in court as suggested by the supreme court.
